Nutrition Testing

The fastest way to relieve your pain – for good

You know you have a problem in your body (you’re reminded of it every day), but you don’t know why. And without understanding why, how can you know what treatment to take? The simple answer is, you can’t.

Enter, testing.

A functional nutrition lab test is the fastest way to get a clear picture of what is happening in your body and why you’re experiencing pain or discomfort. This enables us to eliminate guesswork and go straight to the root cause. No more “try this and come back in 6 weeks if it doesn’t work”. With the detailed test results, we’ll be able to create a personalised treatment plan that relieves your pain – for good.

Below, you’ll find details of some of the functional nutrition lab tests I can do to discover exactly what your body needs in order to feel better, fast.

Here are a few (this list is not comprehensive) of the most useful tests Dianne Rishikof Nutrition offers:

Organic Acids Testing

This urine test measures how your body is operating on many levels. It can give us insight into whether your body is getting and using nutrients, meeting detoxification demands, and the state of your metabolism of carbs, protein and fat. It can also tell us about your neurotransmitter activity and your intestinal health. It is very specific for Candida and Clostridia overgrowth in the gut.

Micronutrient Testing

I am pleased to offer micronutrient testing to my clients through Spectracell. Their exclusive and comprehensive micronutrient test measures 35 essential nutrients INSIDE your cells. This will give a much more accurate and long term picture of your health (compared to conventional blood serum testing you can get at your doctor’s office). Vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, and other nutrients are so crucial to your health and the symptoms of deficiency can be easily overlooked or worse, mistaken for other health problems. Micronutrient deficiencies all have a simple easy solution: supplementation of the nutrient you are deficient in. But you don’t want to just wildly take supplements. Too much of a good thing is dangerous. You want to discover what your unique deficiencies are and how much of specific nutrients you would need to reestablish a healthy level. Genetic Testing

A variety of genetic information can be gathered from a saliva or blood test. I offer genome testing thru several companies. A couple of examples are: Genomic Solutions Now or Nutrigenomix.

Another option is 23andme  After getting your genome mapped in this saliva test, you will receive raw data from 23andme. I can not only interpret that data but also translate that information into targeted solutions. The ultimate in personalized medicine.

In all the above tests, we are interested in Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms. The most researched of which is MTHFR. MTHFR is an enzyme by the name of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. This enzyme converts some B vitamins (namely Folic Acid, B6 and B12) into their usable form for our bodies.  About half the population have inefficient MTHFR (and don’t know it). Without this enzyme, you can pour all the supplements down your throat but those vitamins won’t be usable by your body. Additionally, inefficiency of MTHFR is linked to depression, migraines, autism, fertility, cancer and birth defects. Spectracell has a test for this, and with the results, you can supplement with methylated vitamins and take back control over your health.

This is just one of thousands of SNPs that you have in your genetics, influencing your health.

Weight loss in your genes

Genetic Direction has a genetic test that identifies your genetic makeup around weight loss and exercise. Our genes can tell us a lot about how our bodies process food. From the results of this test, we can create a more targeted and unique-to-you diet and exercise recommendations.

Cardiometabolic Testing

This blood test is not like your ordinary cholesterol test. This measures all varieties of cholesterol, their size and density. The size and density of LDL cholesterol is a crucial clue as to whether they are dangerous or not. This test also measures your metabolism and key markers of blood sugar control to assess for Diabetes risk, as well as essential fatty acids. This inexpensive blood test has many more data points than anything you can get at the conventional doctor.

Comprehensive Stool Test

This stool test analyzes for 73 species of harmful bacteria and 6 species of good, 48 species of yeast and fungus, and 22 parasites. It also assesses the which herbal treatment these pathogens are sensitive to; allowing for faster and more successful treatment. Other markers of inflammation and intestinal health are evaluated as well.

Neurotransmitter Testing

Inadequate neurotransmitters in the body can affect your physical, emotional and mental state. People struggling with depression, anxiety, ADHD, insomnia and fatigue would benefit from this test. With a simple urine sample, we can assess an imbalances in Serotonin, GABA, Dopamine, Epinephrine, Norepinephrine and Glutamate and then fix them. Testing done by Labrix

Hormone Testing:

There are tests to assess your stress hormones (adrenal), thyroid hormones, and sex hormones. This can be helpful in determining the root cause of your symptoms and proper treatment. The adrenal test, in particular, is very helpful and not something that can be done through a conventional doctor. The level of your hormone cortisol is measured through saliva, at 4 time through the day. From this fatigue can be explained and resolved with diet, lifestyle and targeted supplementation.

Food Sensitivity Testing:

Irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, fibromyalgia, reflux, chronic fatigue, skin conditions, joint pain, autism and ADHD are often directly related to reactions to the foods we eat. Each of us has a unique immune system, so what is healthy for one person would be inflammatory to another. If some food or ingredient is causing your body inflammation, symptoms and illness, you need to know. Medications and other treatments won’t help if the root cause isn’t addressed. Think of your inflammation as a fire, and the food you are eating is fueling it. You can throw all the water on it you want, but the fire will still be lit again and again if your diet doesn’t change. A general anti-inflammatory diet includes things like lemons and olives. But in certain individuals, those foods actually cause inflammation.

There are two kinds of food sensitivity testing that I offer:

IgG:

This test assesses your individual immune system’s reaction to a wide range of foods. Immunoglobulin G, when elevated can lead to symptoms.

MRT/LEAP:

Oxford Biomedical Technologies uses a Mediator Release Test to accurately identify sensitivities to foods and food chemicals. The results are very comprehensive and you need guidance on the best way to use them to see the most change.  Therefore, you will work with a LEAP dietitian (me) to change your diet to improve your health through a personalized anti-inflammatory diet.
